In 1887 when alluvial gold was discovered in a creek near Paddy's Rockhole, this lead to the establishment of the Arltunga Goldfield. The local Aborigines called this rock hole Annurra Ntunga, meaning smelly water, and the contraction Arltunga watee hole was used for the whole of the goldfields.
